Our gear has changed considerably since our JMT 2004 hike, to include a lot of light-weight homemade gear. The homemade items we're taking with us include: a 2-person sleeping quilt, a tarp with detachable floor and bugnetting, Lis' pack, and a variety of smaller items, such as our alcohol-burning stove, fleece hats and socks, as well as insulated vests for both of us. Making your own gear allows you to completely control all aspects of any given item, and is also a lot cheaper! For instance, the two vests we made cost us about $70 in materials (including the pattern), and heavier, less-warm vests easily retail for $90 each.
